The post Castro charter acknowledging markets while keeping party supremacy.

Overview

Approved by referendum in February 2019 with 86 percent support, the Cuban Constitution replaced the 1976 text. It recognizes private property and foreign investment as part of the economy under state planning primacy, establishes a president limited to two consecutive five year terms separating the office from party chief, and creates the position of prime minister. It defines the Communist Party as the supreme leading force of society and state, making party supremacy explicit constitutional text. It originally defined marriage as between a man and woman, with the 2022 family code referendum later legalizing same sex marriage.
