Constitution of Fiji (2013)
The fourth constitution, imposing noncommunal politics after repeated coups.
Overview
Decreed in September 2013 after an earlier draft was scrapped, Fijis current constitution abolished communal electoral rolls, established a single chamber parliament elected by proportional representation, and created a bill of rights including social and environmental provisions. It emerged from the wreckage of the 2000 and 2006 coups and replaced the 1997 constitution widely praised for its power sharing design. Critics noted the militarys entrenched role, with amnesty provisions and appointed bodies limiting civilian oversight. It remains the legal framework under which Fiji returned to elected government in 2014.
