The twentieth charter, entrenching military designed tutelage over elected power.

Overview

Approved by referendum in August 2016 and in force April 2017 after the 2014 coup, the twentieth Thai Constitution creates a mixed electoral system benefiting larger parties, an appointed senate with power to join lower house selections of prime minister, and twenty year national strategies binding future governments. It embeds the military drafted framework for a decade. Thai constitutionalism cycles between coups and charters, with twenty constitutions since 1932, and the 2017 text exemplifies the tutelary genre, designed to prevent elected dominance over unelected institutions. The 2024 2025 senate redesign debates continue within its frame.
