Constitution of Tunisia (2014)
The Arab springs consensus charter, praised as regions most democratic, until superseded.
Overview
Adopted January 26, 2014 by Tunisia's constituent assembly with near unanimity, the constitution was hailed as the Arab worlds most democratic, carefully separating religion and state, declaring Islam the religion of the state while protecting freedom of conscience, and creating a semi presidential compromise between president and parliament. It was negotiated by Nidaa Tounes and Ennahda against polarisation and assassinations, praised by the Nobel recognized national dialogue quartet. It functioned until President Kais Saied suspended parliament in July 2021 and imposed a new 2022 constitution of his own drafting ratified in a low turnout referendum, ending the 2014 experiment.
